 Let’s face it. The low-fat dietary dictum is a multi-billion dollar industry built upon a foundation of sinking sand. Not only does the scientific research show that the polyunsaturated vegetable oils promote weight gain, it also shows that they are not good as an animal feed either.

While they do promote weight gain in livestock, they do so at the expense of another essential fatty acid: conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).  CLA is found primarily in beef and dairy products, and cannot be produced in the human body.

Research has shown that animals grazed strictly on grass, their natural diet, can have levels of CLA hundreds of times higher than animals raised on grain feeds.

Also, in a study done by the Department of Animal Science at Southern Illinois University in 2003, it was found that beef finished off on soybean oil directly reduced the amount of CLA produced by ruminant animals.  

What are the known benefits of CLA, now that we have almost lost it from our meat and dairy sources?

So while many people are seeing weight loss on low-carb diets because they are cutting back on refined carbohydrates, many do not see weight loss because they are still lacking proper fats in their diet, and most of the popular low-carb diets are giving mixed messages about which fats are healthy and which ones are not.

If you choose the wrong fat and consume large quantities of it, such as hydrogenated polyunsaturated fats full of trans fatty acids, not only will you not have much success in losing weight, you will probably develop a whole host of other health problems.

Fats have been wrongly accused. They have been blamed for the millions of overweight people in the United States. The truth is that in moderation, some fats can actually be helpful. If you know how to separate the "good" fats from the "bad" fats, you can improve your health and lose weight.

Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs)

Polyunsaturated fats are one of the two types of "good" fats typically eaten. These fats are considered "good" because of their many health benefits.

PUFAs are best known for preventing cardiovascular disease. PUFAs can help your body lower LDL cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol that increases your risk of cardiovascular disease. They can also help your body to raise HDL cholesterols, the "good" cholesterol that decreases your risk of cardiovascular disease.

There are two main types of PUFAs consumed by humans. They are omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 FAs are found in fish, flaxseed, and eggs. Omega-6 FAs are found in vegetable oils, eggs, and poultry. Many foods, including soybeans, have both types of fatty acids.

PUFAs are important because of their health benefits. However, they are also important because your body cannot produce Omega-3s and Omega-6s. They are the only two essential fatty acids, so you must eat them in order to survive.

Americans eat plenty of Omega-6 FAs, but they do not eat enough Omega-3s. This imbalance in PUFA consumption is contributing to the poor health of people in the United States.

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFAs)

Monounsaturated fats are the second type of "good" fats. Similar to PUFAs, MUFAs help your body to lower LDL and raise HDL, decreasing your risk of cardiovascular disease. However, unlike PUFAs, MUFAs are not essential. These can be found in liquid vegetable oils, such as olive, peanut, and canola. They can also be found in nuts, such as walnuts, peanuts, cashews and almonds. Avocados are also rich in MUFAs.

Saturated Fatty Acids

Saturated fats are one of the two types of "bad" fats. They are considered bad because if you eat too many of them, they can be harmful to your health.

Unlike PUFAs and MUFAs, saturated fatty acids increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. They do this by helping to raise your LDL or "bad" cholesterol. These are the fats associated with animals that walk, such as beef, pork, poultry, milk, and milk products. They can also be found in plants, such as coconuts, coconut oil, and palm oil.

Artificial Trans Fatty Acids

Artificial trans fats are the worst type of fats. These man-made fats greatly increase your risk of cardiovascular disease by helping to raise your LDL "bad" cholesterol and lower your HDL "good" cholesterol.

These are created by adding hydrogen to PUFAs and MUFAs. This process removes all of the benefits of the "good" fats and makes them even worst than saturated fats. They are used because they have a high melting point and they increase the shelf life of foods prepared with them. Artificial trans fats can be found in baked goods, fried foods, fast foods, potato chips, and margarines.

All fats are not created equal. Some are good for you and others are bad for you. Eat polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats in moderation to improve your health and lose weight.

Do you know the best way to burn fat?  Would you believe eating fats will burn the fat?   It’s true but not just any fat.  Fat is fattening, fat is full of calories so many people decide to cut the fat when trying to lose weight and burn fat.  When fats are gone from our diet we also lose essential fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins.

 

So, when trying to lose weight there is a fat with fewer calories and doesn’t add to weight gain anymore than eating proteins or carbs.  Sound interesting?  Does it sound like a sales pitch for a new product?  It’s oil with historical backgrounds and no I’m not marketing it.  It’s Coconut Oil!

Substituting coconut oil for other vegetable oils in your diet will help promote weight loss. The use of refined vegetable oil actually promotes weight gain, not just from its calorie content, but because of its harmful effects on the thyroid – the gland that controls metabolism. Polyunsaturated vegetable oils depress thyroid activity, thus lowering metabolic rate – just the opposite of coconut oil.

Here’s a good example of the public’s views on coconut oil.  Farmers are looking for ways to fatten their livestock because bigger animals bring bigger profits. Fats and oils are used in animal feed to quickly pack the weight on so they can go to market faster. Saturated fat seemed like a good choice to fatten up livestock so pig farmers fed coconut products to their pigs to pack the pounds on, but when it was added to the animal feed, the pigs lost weight!
